Novelty Wall Clocks For Any Style by Blake Allen

Looking for Novelty Wall ClocksWhen you think about novelty gifts, chances are that loud, tacky items, like singing fish, or crude jokes come to mind. However, that’s not all there is to the world of novelty gift giving. There are plenty of fun ideas out there that won’t annoy the recipient.

Novelty clocks are one place that you can show some humor, while still giving a gift that’s got some use. Styles are available on the market to suit any taste, but here are a few suggestions.

Clocks in Disguise

One major category of novelty clocks is the type that seems like an ordinary clock, until you take a closer look. Barbershop clocks (with backwards numbers), upside down clocks, and 24 hour clocks are a few of this type.

A little more obvious, but still unobtrusive are the “all 5’s” clock (it’s always time to go home), the “I don’t do mornings” clock (with some of the numbers missing), and the “I don’t care” clock (numbers jumbled at the bottom). One great thing about all novelty clocks is that no matter what’s on the clock face, they’ll still keep accurate time. That means that they’re useful as well as being amusing.

Character Clocks

Clocks shaped like your favorite cartoon character or like animals have been around for a long time. There’s the classic cat clock, Mickey Mouse, and plenty of others to choose from. However, if you’re looking for an unusual novelty gift for a friend, don’t rule these out just because you’ve seen them before.

There are now clocks available featuring characters that weren’t around a few years ago, such as Japanese anime-themed items. Take a look around to see what kind of novelty character clocks you can find. Just a few of the offerings include dog and cat clocks, roosters, mythological clocks, and may more.

Nostalgic Clocks

There are also novelty clocks geared towards a retro look and feel. You can now buy new versions of the old Coca Cola ad clocks, diner-type clocks, and models with turn of the century art on the faces. No matter what era you or your gift’s recipient are interested in, there’s probably a cute novelty clock to help evoke your nostalgia.

Decorative Wall Clocks - Have You Considered these 9 Options? by Steve Braun

You want a wall clock that keeps time AND gives you decorative pleasure? Before you make a choice, consider these nine types of wall clocks that are sure to add to your decor. Purchasing the right wall clock can give you many years of pleasure, add to your decor and even gift you with visual and sound memories in the years to come. Your decorative wall clock can even become a conversation piece.Do you remember any clocks from your childhood? I remember two clocks in particular from my early years. One was in my grandmother’s house in St. Paul, Minnesota. She had a cuckoo clock that was endlessly fascinating to me at four and a half years old. The cuckoo bird popping out was a visual treat while we were simultaneously regaled by a number of “cuckoo’s” equivalent to the hour. I liked pulling on the weighted chain, too, that wound up the clock.

The other clock we acquired while I was in elementary school. It was one of those glass-encased wall pendulum clocks. This one had a “key” to wind it up with. The chiming on the hour is unforgettable and, to this day, brings nostalgic feelings when I hear it 40 years later. It reminds me of a place and time in my life… Your decorative clock choice can do this for your and your family as well.

More recently I remember a large wall clock when we were invited to dinner. Our friends had hung it on one of the few wall spaces in their kitchen. It was elegant and a real conversation piece. Large wall clocks are pretty dramatic in typical-sized rooms.

There are some memorable quotes about or including clocks. Here are just a few:

  • “We all run on two clocks. One is the outside clock, which ticks away our decades and brings us ceaselessly to the dry season. The other is the inside clock, where you are your own timekeeper and determine your own chronology, your own internal weather and your own rate of living.” - Max Lerner
  • “Love vanquishes time. To lovers, a moment can be eternity, eternity can be the tick of a clock.” - Mary Parrish
  • “Quiet minds cannot be perplexed or frightened, but go on in fortune or misfortune at their own private pace, like a clock during a thunderstorm.” - Robert Louis Stevenson

Consider these types of wall clocks to help you find one to fit or become the centerpiece of your wall decor in a room. Think through all these options when choosing your timepiece:

  • antique wall clocks
  • retro wall clocks
  • contemporary wall clocks
  • pendulum wall clocks
  • neon wall clocks
  • kitchen wall clocks
  • large wall clocks
  • novelty wall clocks
  • unique wall clocks

You may not find all of these clock types well-represented at one clock dealer whether “brick and mortar” or online. Is a contemporary look important to you, or would you rather go with an antique or retro look? Do you want certain features such as a pendulum or neon light? Do you want something unusual enough that you feel fairly certain you are the only one with something like it in your circles? Do you want a large bold clock? Decide which type interests you the most or makes your heart leap and search for that particular type of wall clock. In your looking you may run across just the right one or you may decide another type will work better for you after all.

Some of the features you may want to pay attention to when considering a clock:

  • Chiming or musical?
  • What color would look good?
  • What is it made of?
  • What number style do you prefer (Roman, Arabic, none, etc.)
  • What shape appeals to you?
  • What would make it memorable?
  • What size would suit you

You now know some of the main types of wall clocks available as options for your wall decor. You’ve also explored some of the features to think about when considering a clock. Presumably now, you will want not only an item that keeps time on your wall, but a piece that also speaks to your heart, possibly makes memories and starts interesting conversations as well. That’s a lot to ask of a decorative wall clock, but your will find one out there, if you’ll only look.
