Grandfather Clocks - A Brief History

Grandfather clocks were originally known as floor clocks or long case clocks. A song written in 1875 called “The Grandfather’s Clock” told the story of an aging floor clock that stood in the George Hotel in North Yorkshire, England. Two brothers managed the hotel. The clock began slowly losing time immediately upon the death of one of the brothers, and upon the death of the second brother, the floor clock stopped working altogether despite numerous attempts to have the clock repaired. Eventually new management gained control of the George Hotel, but the clock remained in place as a tribute to the two brothers who had faithfully managed the hotel for so many years. The term “grandfather clock” caught on quickly after the song became widely known and since then, what were originally known as floor clocks are commonly called Grandfather Clocks and are a cherished part of our culture.

Over the years there have been numerous improvements to time-keeping devices and grandfather clocks are no exception. Cuckoo Clocks And Timeless Memories

I’m starting to age I guess in that I’m enjoying more the sounds of my youth like a simple clockwork cuckoo clock. The timeless sound of the cuckoo bring back many memories. When I was a child, both my uncle and grandparents had cookoo clocks. I remember they were dark colored cases with ornate carvings but the bird that came out was brightly colored. I was told these were from the black forest in Germany.

I guess the Germans have a lock on authentic cuckoo clocks as when I got older, I went shopping for one and they were all German made clockworks. The new ones however were just like I remember. Darker carved woods on the outside with ornate carvings.

My parents had both a mantle clock and a wall clock that struck the quarter half and hour times. They were wonderful. Many people have fond memories about growing up. Foods, holidays, smells, and even sounds. I remember how our home was always breathing the sounds of our clocks. Even as an adult, going for visits brought me in many respects back to childhood days when hearing the constant patterned sounds of those time trackers. It was home!

Today, I have a grandfather clock, cuckoo clock, and several other clockwork type clocks all around my home. Yes, they aren’t as “accurate” as quartz timepieces or as fancy as the latest technology has to offer. But there’s something about their even pace, pendulums, weekly winding and yes, the announcement that time is marching on, that is somehow soothing. Almost melodic.

In the night, when every is asleep, I sometimes go down to the living room and just think. The clocks are busy, as always, pacing out time and announcing yet another quarter hour has past. It’s recognition of mortality, that some things don’t last, while others, like the cuckoo clock seem to last lifetimes.

CD Clock Radio - A Personal Review

I simply love my CD clock radio. For me the way you wake up in the morning is important, so why not do it the right way? Why torment yourself with some earsplitting and obnoxious beeping alarm clock? Since the time I got my CD clock radio I’ve been waking up in the most luxurious ways possible.

At times if I’m feeling especially sophisticated I’ll set on some Bach or perhaps some Beethoven to wake up to on my CD clock radio. There’s really nothing like starting the day off with some timeless classical music softly wafting into your ears and easing you from your slumber into a state of wakefulness. There have been times when I have dreams of hearing this music before I arise, and the rest of the day I feel composed and rested instead of irritated and rushed.

Obviously, I presume the main reason people prefer loud buzzers to wake up to, is to ensure they really awaken, but personally I have found that even gentle music from my CD clock radio almost always does the trick. Or if I’m worried about getting up by a certain time, I can set the CD clock radios buzzer alarm as well as the music. First the music plays, but then five minutes later I set the buzzer to go off just to make sure. Despite the fact that I never had to hear that buzzer, it’s reassuring to know that its there.

Another nice feature about my CD clock radio is the alternative sounds it has to wake up to. Made by Timex, my CD clock radio has a selection of ‘nature sounds’ to play in place of a buzzer. Though it may not have a very extensive selection of sounds, but they are actually pretty nice. One of them is not really a nature sound, but is a series of gentle wind chime like tones that play in a very Zen like manner. Perhaps if I’m tired of waking up to classical - Bach, I can adopt a more Eastern style of starting the day and wake up feeling like a Buddhist monk instead! With regards to the sound quality on my CD clock radio is only fair, and is not really designed to replace or act as a CD player.

CD clock radios are just great alternatives to your standard clock radios, and enable you to slip in any kind of music you want to wake up to. And yes! You even have the option of waking up to the radio as their names imply, if you run out of CD ideas.

A Time before Clock and Watches: A Series (part 1)

How Time Was Measured Before the Clock

How many times have you wondered, “What time is it?” and turned to your wrist only to find you forgot to put on your watch. We have become so programmed to know what time it is and schedule our lives around it that it is second nature to bend your arm, turn your wrist and get the answer. It has not always been so easy, or even necessary as you will see by looking back to a time before clocks and watches.

Like Night and Day

The precision with which we measure time today is light years away from how it was done, not so long ago. Time was once measured completely by the universe around us – and still is in a sense when you understand the science and physics behind the measurement of time and what makes a clock work (more on this in part 2). What earlier civilizations knew and relied upon each day was that the sun came up and went down and that block of time became a day. To measure greater expanses, the moon and its reliable cycles were also observed. The moon was used to measure the time period which came to be known as a month – more technically a lunar month of 28 days – or the time it took for the moon to go from new to crescent to full and new again.

Ancient Civilization

Even more than just observing the moon, sun, and planets, there are artifacts that show us that time was measured a bit more precisely. Early calendars and “clocks” were found in what is now Iraq, once the dwelling place of the ancient Sumerians, and consisted of a calendar that was divided into 30 day segments according to the cycle of the moon. It was then divided into 12 sections which corresponded to 2 hours of today’s time. Further, the calendar was sectioned off into 30 more parts equivalent to 4 modern-day minutes.

Stonehenge is located in England and was built more than 4,000 years ago. Not much is completely understood about this mysterious structure, but the way it is positioned has scientists believing that it somehow was used to record seasons and the phenomenon of lunar eclipses and the like.

Sundials

The Sumerian culture passed away without the information about their timekeeping being discovered until more modern times. The next phase of more precise time measurement was used by the Egyptians. They created the Obelisk around 3500 BC which looked like today’s Washington Monument, well-known to visitors of the Nation’s capital. This tall, tapered monument would cast shadows throughout the day, but was primitive still in how closely the time periods could be measured. It mostly reflected a change between morning and afternoon, and how the days would get shorter or longer with the seasons.

The sundial on the other hand was first used about 1500 BC and was a much smaller and more portable timekeeping device. It was divided into 10 equal parts with two additional segments representing twilight and dawn. The sundial itself then emerged from a horizontal plate to a bowl shape with pointer and inscribed lines to mark off the hours. It is believed that by 30 BC there were more than 13 different styles of sundials used in the evolving societies of Asia Minor, Italy, and Greece.

When one thinks about the precision of a finely crafted Swiss timepiece it is hard to imagine a time when time was so ambiguous. Could society function without time measurements to the very minute? Perhaps in another millennium society will wonder how we functioned living in just one time.

Great Clocks – Great Convenience, Part II

In the last post, we looked at the impact the Internet has had on all of our lives. The convenience it has afforded us has allowed us to do everything from shop to work online and most of us have become so dependent on its conveniences that we are often hard pressed to find another option.

However, being the age that I am, I reverted to past behavior when I found myself in need of a wall clock for my family room. Wanting something really special to hang above my fireplace, I went in search of a bricks and mortar location; as I couldn’t imagine finding something of high enough quality online. But when I pulled the phone directory out and began to leaf through it, my teenage daughter stopped me in my tracks with “Are you kidding me mom?”

She logged on within seconds and had me at this amazing website where I found all of the most stunning, high quality (and affordable!) clocks I could ever hope to find in a retail outlet – and then some! Everything from grandfather clocks and mantel clocks to wall clocks and atomic clocks were on this one site and easy to browse by style, price, or manufacturer.

In found the wall clock I was looking for and it only took minutes. Within a few days it was delivered to my door and every time I look at it I am reminded of the luxuries I am privileged to have access to online.

Be More In Control Of Time With The Desktop Alarm Clock!

With the innovation of the internet buying a desktop alarm clock has never been easier. Until recently there was only one way to get a desktop alarm clock – you had to go to a store and buy one. Not only you would have to select from a very limited number of desktop alarm clocks, but hopefully you will find one that would suit your tastes.

Well, the problem with this approach to buying yourself an alarm clock for you desktop is that you are not likely to find sufficient styles of timepieces at any one store except if you go in knowing exactly what it is that you want. For instance, you may have no problem to find a digital desktop alarm clock at one store, but there might be no good looking analog kind with the classical look that some people may prefer. Or, just maybe you might find yourself in the position of shopping at a more expensive boutique and only discover flashy desktop alarm clocks with silly fake pillars at the sides of them, whilst all you want is something to display the time and maybe wake you up in the morning with a horribly annoying ring that is impossible to ignore.

No matter what you want in a desktop alarm clock, it should be pretty easy to find one at the supermarket or even your local drug store. As a matter a fact, desktop alarm clocks are undoubtedly the easiest piece of electric gear, one can find anywhere – so you shouldn’t have a problem.

For those who are looking for a desktop alarm clock, I recommend getting one with a clock radio, as the sounds coming out from the other one are really annoying, and for sure you can start off in a bad mood! Of course, you should also think about what you want the desktop alarm clock for. Well if you would like one to travel, perhaps you will find one for lesser than 15 dollars, wherein these small desktop alarm clocks can be powered for quite some time on nothing more than a battery. On the other hand if you want something that will look nice in your room, however, the considerations are more comfortable.

Frankly speaking, I hardly ever use my desktop alarm clock now that I have an alarm clock on my computer desktop. To wake me up in the morning, it can play any of my mp3s in stead of having to put up with whatever is on the radio, or even worse that awful beeping that most desktop alarm clocks have. In my opinion I believe it will soon leave the traditional desktop alarm clock obsolete.

There are few of us who can even remember what life was before the Internet. I know that I, for one, have many younger nieces and nephews that are unaware that such a life existed, as they have always pointed and clicked for what they have wanted. I also know that there are many, many times during the week when I will find myself pondering a question – large or small – and know that I can simply logon for instant answers. I am old enough, however, that each and every time that I do this I think to myself, “How did anyone live without this?”

It’s true that the Internet has provided us with unbelievable convenience in nearly all areas of our life. From banking and shopping to research and education – everything is right there at our fingertips when it comes to the Internet.

More than anything, as the popularity of shopping online has exploded, vendors have really stepped up their game in terms of making sure that they are providing high quality products at all times. Shopping online is not an alternative scenario in many cases; it is the first place shoppers go. And the savvy and sophisticated shoppers of the modern world expect great products and great prices when they get there.

Recently I was in need of a wall clock. We have recently redecorated our family room and I was looking for something really special to hang above the fireplace. I decided a wall clock would be the perfect fit and I started looking through the yellow pages (remember those?) to find a retailer in my area that had really high quality clocks. You can imagine the look this garnered from the teenager in the house.
